The French title card misspells the Indian city as „Dehli“
Chronology
Emily Perez follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. Emily, a cartel leader, hires Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live her true self. Carla Sofia Gascon talks about the two years of preparation that went into this demanding role, about the two extremes of Jacques Audiard’s film and her own personality, which she had to play as Emily and Manita. Jacques Audiard said that he was inspired by the idea for the musical from a chapter in the novel about a drug dealer who wants to change his identity.

Emily Perez is a 2024 musical drama starring Zoe Saldana as Rita, a lawyer who is doing her job until a drug lord kidnaps her and demands a sex change.
Of course, Carla-Sophie Gascon plays Emilie Perez, a sex-changed drug lord who continues to build her (no longer „her“) empire
Along the way, Selena Gomez plays Jessie, the wife of a drug lord who is adjusting to her new life with the children she raised with him after a sex change she doesn’t know about. The majority of the story is delivered through musical numbers, so if you don’t like that kind of genre, stay away from it. This movie in particular had a really strange effect on me when I finished it because I went into it blind, and honestly, you should, because the movie as a whole is very unexpected and quite comical in places. as well as When the director and cast of the film introduced it to us, the film started and the audience spread laughter and joy at some points in the film, which I appreciated.
The musical performance at the end was boring in my opinion, but I think it summed up the story a bit
The most notable things about the film are its amazing cinematography (which was jaw-dropping to say the least), the acting by all involved, and some of the musical numbers. Now why do I say „some“; the musical numbers, as most of them are quite great and impactful to the story, but as the film progressed, the musical numbers became much less attention-grabbing than they used to be and became clichéd. But don’t listen to me anyway, because everyone has their own movie and I really enjoyed some elements of this film and I think most of you will too when it comes out soon enough. Overall, although not as good as I had hoped, Emily Perez is still a cinematic achievement in terms of musical numbers and great actors, which really makes the film more engaging and fun.
Review: ALondon Film Festival Opening
If you like musicals, give Emily Perez a try. I think it successfully delivers what the audience can expect from it.
